Negroni Week at kybecca

Note: This week, we decided to switch it up a bit. Instead of doing a full review of kybecca (which we will do, don't worry - full disclosure, it's one of my favorite locations in Fredericksburg), we're reviewing their special Negroni Week cocktails.

Event:
Negroni Week

What is Negroni Week, you ask? It's an international event where local bars will serve craft negroni cocktails, and then donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity of their choice. For this event, kybecca is donating $1 for each negroni sold to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.

And what's a negroni? The traditional cocktail is made of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel.

Four negronis are available for this event:
  • Classic
  • Tea Time
  • Razeroni
  • Conte Camillo
If you sit at the bar, you also have the option to create your own.

Full disclosure: I am not a huge gin fan. Mike enjoys it, though, so he has more experience and knowledge of it.

Here are our thoughts on the 3 we tried:

Tea Time
  • Smells like candy
  • Hint of almost a gingerbread flavor
  • The longer it sits, the more it mellows
  • Overall pretty smooth without much bite
  • A little syrupy - kind of thick
Cante Camillo
  • The smell when the drink arrives is mainly the jalapeño. You don't get much of the gin smell
  • Jeremy: All the jalapeño flavor, none of the spice
  • Mike "My top lip is numb"
  • Krebbs "I just taste liquid"
  • At first it was bitter, but it mellowed out as it sat. It also got spicier
Classic

  • Smells like an old fashioned, and at the beginning, it tastes like one too, but with gin instead of bourbon
  • Unlike the others, the taste doesn't change after it sits
  • It leaves a bitter aftertaste
  • The floral gin flavor comes through more with the classic than the others
Our Rankings
  • Krebbs: 1) Tea Time 2) Classic 3) Cante Camillo
  • Mike: 1) Cante Camillo 2) TeaTime 3) Classic
  • Jeremy: Tied for 1) Tea Time and Classic 2) Cante Camillo
If you love gin, we would highly recommend that you make it to kybecca to try these cocktails before the event ends on the 7th. If you don't like gin, or you've never tried it, this is the best opportunity for you to try it. Tell 'em we sent you.
